In 8th grade the thought of having to pick your classes for high school might seem fun but might cause you to be even more nervous about this transition. Deciding on your classes makes you realize that you really will be in high school soon. I asked some current eighth graders about their thoughts regarding entering high school.
Karsyn Stevens, an 8th grader at Liberty, was asked about her thoughts of becoming an EHS freshman. Karsyn stated that she was nervous. “It makes me nervous because everyone is older and there will be people that I have never seen before.” Karsyn likes the size and feel of Liberty Middle School and feels that the high school is too big. Even though she is nervous about his next step in her schooling, she is also excited. Karsyn is looking forward to the new electives that high school has to offer. “I get to learn new things!” she exclaimed. Another positive thing about high school for Karsyn is that she is getting closer to getting her driver’s license. Yes, Karsyn is thrilled about driving but is worried about getting her permit. Whether Karsyn is ready or not, she will be tackling a nervous, yet exciting, 9th grade year soon.
Eighth grader, Mallory Gerling, was also interviewed about her thoughts about high school. Mallory has mixed emotions about entering her freshman year too. She mentioned that she is nervous about all the new people that will be there. Even though she is nervous, Mallory is looking forward to making new friends. She is also eager to see some old friends from Lincoln as well. When asked about the classes that the high school offers, Mallory was excited. “The topics the high school offers are interesting.” She added to her response by commenting how ecstatic she is to get her permit and license soon. Mallory knows that high school might be somewhat scary, but she is “getting older and things are going to change.”
As the school year is coming to an end, eighth grade students should not be nervous. A few years ago, these students were new to middle school. They were mixed with several intermediate schools. Friendships were made. Classes were passed. They were nervous and excited; and they survived. They will succeed again.
