In the month of July, hundreds of cheerleaders go to O’Fallon High School for a four-day intense cheer camp. The Liberty Middle School cheerleaders are part of that group. XC Camp is a nine-hour camp for three days and on the last day all the teams compete against one another. Maddy Murphy, a sixth-grade flyer on the cheer team, says that she really enjoys XC Camp. She thinks it was all very fun but specifically enjoyed the stunts and dance. Her favorite part of camp was learning the pyramid because she got to try new skills that she had never done before. Josslyn Menossi, an eight-grade back spot said, “The hardest part of XC Camp is waiting so long for lunch.” At camp, you must wait about six to seven hours before you get to eat lunch. “The most exciting part of camp was being able to perform the routine on the last day and winning camp,” says Josslyn. Overall, both Maddy and Joss had an exciting and unforgettable first XC Camp.
Cheerleaders attend XC Camp all three years of middle school, so you have a lot of opportunities for growth and new accomplishments. Paisley States’ favorite part of the routine is dance, since she likes faster paced things. “I feel happy that we won, because the cheer team did not get any awards last year,” says Paisley, a seventh-grade base. This year at camp the Liberty Cheerleaders won best junior high, which is a huge accomplishment given the number of teams that attend. Eight-grade flyer, Teagan Graville said, “In sixth grade I was really nervous and scared. I did not know much about the camp and how it worked. But in eighth grade I was ready to go every day and knew what to expect at camp.” Teagan said what she would miss most about camp was being the oldest middle school students and knowing all her teammates super well. Both Paisley and Teagan are two of the returners that have been to camp multiple times. In conclusion, all the cheerleaders had a lot of fun at XC Camp and made unforgettable memories.
